Trail Overview The loop begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest of aspens and pines. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) will see you gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. Mid-Trail Highlights As you continue, the trail opens up to a series of meadows around the 3 km (1.8 miles) mark. Here, you’ll gain another 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. This is also a great spot for birdwatching; species like the Mountain Bluebird and Red-tailed Hawk are commonly seen.

Historical Significance Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) point, you’ll come across remnants of old mining operations. San Miguel County has a rich mining history dating back to the late 19th century. Reaching Hawn Mountain The trail then begins a steeper ascent towards Hawn Mountain. Over the next 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains. This is an excellent spot for a break and some photography.

Descending to Willow Creek The descent towards Willow Creek is more gradual, covering the final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop. This section of the trail follows the creek, providing a soothing soundtrack of flowing water. The area around Willow Creek is lush and green, often frequented by elk and various small mammals.
