Spent the day exploring the beautiful city of Nagasaki. Seems to combine the best bits of Vancouver and San Francisco. A bit busy today because it’s a public holiday (Silver Week) but even so all very civilised. Finished off with a good look round Thomas Glover’s former home and garden. Glover was a Scottish engineer who came here in the 1860s and was one of the founding fathers of Japan’s industrialisation post the Meiji Restoration. Among other things, he started up a brewery that became today’s Kirin beer, and was one of the original directors of what is now Mitsubishi. Amazing man.
