History & Highlights
Lakeland Slate Industry: Chapel Stile and the surrounding Langdale Valley have been centers of slate quarrying since the 19th century. The traditional green Westmorland slate quarried nearby shaped the architectural character of local cottages, farm buildings, and drystone walls along this trail.
Neolithic Roots: Long before slate mining, the Langdale area was a major Neolithic hub (c. 3300–2900 BC). The nearby scree slopes of the Langdale Pikes provided greenstone for stone axes that were traded across Great Britain, while prehistoric cup-and-ring rock art remains preserved in the valley at Copt Howe.
Traditional Cumbrian Hill Farming: The valley floor showcases centuries of traditional Lakeland sheep farming. Drystone walls divide long-held farm pastures, and traditional Herdwick sheep remain central to maintaining the iconic, historic landscape.
