Great Basin National Park is located in eastern Nevada, USA, near the Utah border. The park is situated in the remote region of the Great Basin Desert, with the nearest towns being Baker, just outside the park, and Ely, about 60 miles away. The park is known for its striking landscapes, including the towering Wheeler Peak and the ancient bristlecone pines. Great Basin National Park was established on October 27, 1986, although the region's significance dates back to early Native American cultures. One of the park’s key historical sites is Lehman Caves, which was designated a national monument in 1922 before being absorbed into the park. The caves are famous for their intricate limestone formations and stunning subterranean beauty. Parking facilities are available throughout the park, including at major trailheads, the visitor center, and Lehman Caves. Parking is free, but entry into the park is managed via permits, and there are guided tours available for a fee at Lehman Caves. Wildlife in the park is diverse, with species such as mule deer, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn being common. The park is also home to a variety of smaller mammals, birds, and reptiles, including the Great Basin rattlesnake and golden eagles. Flora in Great Basin varies with elevation, ranging from sagebrush and desert wildflowers at lower altitudes to dense forests of pinyon pine, juniper, and aspen at mid-elevations. Above the tree line, visitors will find the ancient bristlecone pines, some of which are over 4,000 years old, making them some of the oldest living organisms on Earth. Notable features of the park include the 13,065-foot Wheeler Peak, Lehman Caves, and the Lexington Arch. Public transportation to Great Basin National Park is limited, so most visitors arrive by car, though tours from nearby towns are occasionally available.
