Ottawa National Forest is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA. It spans over 990,000 acres and is bordered by the towns of Ironwood, Bessemer, and Ontonagon, with the city of Marquette to the east. Established in 1931, the forest has a rich history tied to the logging industry and conservation efforts during the Great Depression, which led to its reforestation and preservation. The forest offers numerous parking facilities, with over 20 designated parking areas scattered throughout. Some areas may require a small fee, especially those near popular trailheads or campgrounds. Visitors are encouraged to check specific rules at each site, as some areas may have restrictions to protect the environment. Ottawa National Forest is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, white-tailed deer, and gray wolves. Birdwatchers can spot species like the bald eagle and the rare Kirtland's warbler. The forest's flora is equally diverse, featuring northern hardwoods like sugar maple and yellow birch, as well as coniferous trees such as white pine and hemlock. Unique vegetation includes the carnivorous pitcher plant found in the forest's wetlands. Notable features within the park include the Porcupine Mountains, which offer stunning vistas and hiking opportunities. The Ontonagon River and Lake Gogebic provide excellent fishing and boating experiences. The Sylvania Wilderness, a designated wilderness area, is renowned for its pristine lakes and old-growth forests. Public transportation to Ottawa National Forest is limited. However, visitors can reach nearby towns via regional bus services, and from there, rental cars or local shuttles can be used to access the forest. This ensures that even those without personal vehicles can explore the natural beauty of this expansive forest.
