Folgefonna National Park is located in Norway, within the region of Vestland, specifically in the Hardanger district. The park is situated on the Folgefonna Peninsula and is home to the third-largest glacier in mainland Norway, Folgefonna Glacier. Nearby towns include Odda, Jondal, and Rosendal, making them convenient bases for exploring the park. The park was established on May 14, 2005, to protect the pristine natural environment around the glacier and surrounding landscapes. Folgefonna has long been a vital part of local history, as its glacier-fed rivers have contributed to hydropower development in the region. Parking facilities at Folgefonna National Park are relatively well-distributed across the main access points. There are several parking areas, including the Jondal Glacier Center and the Buer Valley, which serve as starting points for hikes. Parking fees may apply in some locations, and visitors are advised to check local signs for specific rules. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including reindeer, red foxes, and mountain hares. Bird species such as golden eagles, gyrfalcons, and ptarmigans can also be spotted. The glacier and its surrounding areas provide a unique habitat for these species. In terms of flora, the lower areas of the park are covered with lush deciduous forests, featuring birch and rowan trees. Higher elevations near the glacier support hardy alpine plants like mosses, lichens, and heather. One of the most notable features of Folgefonna National Park is the Folgefonna Glacier itself, which offers spectacular views and opportunities for guided glacier walks. The park also has stunning waterfalls, like Furebergfossen, and rivers such as the Bondhus River. Public transport options to the park include buses from nearby towns like Odda, though having a car provides easier access to the more remote areas. Photo Credit: Jarle Refsnes
