Rakiura National Park is situated on Stewart Island/Rakiura, New Zealand’s southernmost island. The nearest town is Oban, a small settlement providing access to the park. Established in 2002, the park covers over 85% of Stewart Island, preserving its untouched landscapes and unique wildlife. Parking is available near Oban, with specific areas for long-term parking near ferry terminals. Rakiura is home to native wildlife like the Southern brown kiwi (tokoeka), yellow-eyed penguins, and several seabird species. Dense podocarp forests dominate the landscape, featuring species like rimu, kahikatea, and native ferns. Key landmarks include the Rakiura Track, a Great Walk offering coastal and forest views, and Mason Bay, known for its remote beauty. Access to Stewart Island is primarily by ferry from Bluff or by flight from Invercargill. Local shuttle services are available to connect visitors from the ferry terminal to various trailheads and accommodation options.
