Kings Plains National Park is located in northern New South Wales, Australia, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of the town of Inverell and around 480 kilometers north of Sydney. The park is relatively remote, with the closest towns being Inverell and Glen Innes. Established in 1988, Kings Plains National Park was created to protect the region's unique ecosystems and cultural heritage. It sits within the traditional lands of the Ngarabal people, who have a long history of connection to the area. The park was once part of large pastoral holdings but has since been preserved as a natural sanctuary. Parking facilities in Kings Plains National Park are modest, with parking areas near the main picnic grounds, camping areas, and at the trailheads for the park's walking tracks. Parking is free, but visitors are encouraged to use designated areas to preserve the park’s natural environment. Wildlife in Kings Plains National Park includes a variety of native Australian species. Visitors may encounter eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, and echidnas, along with an abundance of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles, parrots, and honeyeaters. The park’s riverine habitat supports species such as the platypus, which can occasionally be spotted in Kings Plains Creek. The park's flora is dominated by dry sclerophyll forests, with eucalyptus trees such as yellow box and ironbark being common. In the understorey, species like native grasses and wattles are prevalent, and in spring, the park is dotted with colorful wildflowers. A notable feature of Kings Plains National Park is Kings Plains Falls, a scenic waterfall on Kings Plains Creek, which cascades over granite rocks into a deep pool. There are also scenic walking tracks and viewpoints throughout the park. Public transport is not available, and visitors will need to arrive by private vehicle. Photo Credit: Robert Cleary
