Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site is located in the southern part of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. This remote park includes over 1,500 square kilometers of land and sea and is managed collaboratively by the Haida Nation and the Canadian government. The nearby communities are Sandspit and Queen Charlotte, which serve as gateways to the park. Established in 1988, Gwaii Haanas protects both natural ecosystems and the cultural heritage of the Haida people. It is renowned for its ancient Haida villages, totem poles, and archaeological sites, including SG̱ang Gwaay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This collaborative management between Parks Canada and the Haida Nation was a groundbreaking agreement that continues to influence conservation and cultural preservation. As the park is located on remote islands, traditional parking facilities are limited. Visitors typically reach Gwaii Haanas by boat or floatplane, and there are no roads within the park itself. Access is carefully controlled to preserve the environment, and visitors must obtain permits. Most people explore the park by kayak, boat, or on guided tours. Wildlife in Gwaii Haanas includes both land and marine species. The park is home to Haida Gwaii’s unique subspecies of black bear, as well as river otters, Sitka black-tailed deer, and various birds such as bald eagles and peregrine falcons. Marine life is rich, with orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, and various seabirds populating the waters around the islands. The flora in Gwaii Haanas includes temperate rainforests with western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and red cedar trees. The understory features mosses, ferns, and unique plant species found only in this region. Key landmarks include the towering totem poles at SG̱ang Gwaay and the dramatic sea cliffs, ancient forests, and rocky beaches that define the park’s landscape. Public transportation options are limited; most visitors rely on chartered boats or floatplanes from Sandspit or Queen Charlotte to reach the park.
