Saxon Switzerland National Park is located in eastern Germany, in the state of Saxony, along the border with the Czech Republic. The park is part of the larger Elbe Sandstone Mountains and lies near the cities of Dresden and Pirna, with the picturesque towns of Bad Schandau and Königstein serving as primary access points. Established in 1990, Saxon Switzerland National Park was created to protect the dramatic sandstone formations, deep gorges, and dense forests unique to the region. The park shares a border with the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic, forming a cross-border conservation area that preserves one of Europe’s most stunning natural landscapes. Parking is available at key entry points, including Bad Schandau, Rathen, and Königstein. There are about 10 main parking areas, with fees typically ranging from €3 to €5 per day. Some areas also offer free parking, but spaces can be limited, especially during peak tourist seasons. Visitors are encouraged to park in designated lots to reduce the environmental impact on the park. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including species such as red deer, wild boar, and European mouflon. Bird species like peregrine falcons, black storks, and eagle owls can also be seen soaring over the rocky cliffs. Saxon Switzerland is a stronghold for rare species such as the European otter and the endangered Ural owl. The flora in the park is varied, with forests of beech, oak, and spruce dominating the landscape. The rugged cliffs and gorges are home to unique rock vegetation, including lichens and mosses, and the park’s meadows bloom with wildflowers in spring and summer. Notable landmarks include the iconic Bastei rock formation and the historic Königstein Fortress, as well as the scenic Elbe River, which winds through the park’s valleys. Public transport is well-organized, with trains connecting Dresden and Bad Schandau, and buses providing service to various parts of the park. The Elbe River ferry system also offers an alternative way to explore the park by water.
