Gardens of Stone National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, about 150 kilometers northwest of Sydney, near the towns of Lithgow, Capertee, and Newnes. The park is situated on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, part of the greater Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, known for its striking rock formations and diverse ecosystems. Established in 1994, Gardens of Stone National Park was created to protect its unique sandstone landscapes, featuring pagoda rock formations, deep gorges, and expansive plateaus. The park’s dramatic terrain has cultural significance to the Wiradjuri and Dharug people, whose history and presence are reflected in the area's rock art and heritage sites. Parking facilities are available at several access points within the park, particularly near popular attractions like the Lost City and the Glow Worm Tunnel. There are no entry or parking fees, but some areas require four-wheel-drive access due to rugged terrain. Visitors are advised to park in designated areas to protect the environment. Gardens of Stone National Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and the threatened broad-headed snake. The park is also rich in birdlife, with species such as the wedge-tailed eagle, lyrebird, and glossy black cockatoo commonly seen. The flora in the park is equally diverse, with heathlands, eucalypt forests, and patches of temperate rainforest. Common plant species include banksias, wattles, and grass trees. The park’s unique geology creates microhabitats for rare plant species, such as the Blue Mountains pine. Notable landmarks include the Lost City, a collection of sandstone pinnacles resembling ancient ruins, and the Glow Worm Tunnel, an old railway tunnel now inhabited by glow worms. Public transport to Gardens of Stone National Park is limited. The nearest train station is in Lithgow, from where visitors can drive or join guided tours to explore the park. A car is recommended for exploring the more remote areas.
