Cunnawarra National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, in the Northern Tablelands region. The park lies about 70 km east of the city of Armidale and is also near the towns of Ebor and Dorrigo, making it a remote yet accessible natural destination within the New England area. The park was established in 1999 to protect the rich biodiversity and ancient rainforests of the region, which form part of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. Cunnawarra National Park is also culturally significant to the Indigenous people of the area, whose presence dates back thousands of years. Parking is available at key entry points and camping areas within the park, including the Cunnawarra Campground. Parking is free, and visitors can park near designated campsites. There are no entry fees for the park, but camping permits may be required for overnight stays. Parking areas are relatively limited due to the park’s remote nature, so visitors should plan accordingly. Cunnawarra National Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife. Notable species include the spotted-tailed quoll, koalas, and brush-tailed rock-wallabies. Birdlife is abundant, with species like the satin bowerbird, lyrebird, and powerful owl making their homes in the park’s ancient forests. The flora in Cunnawarra is dominated by old-growth eucalypt forests and cool temperate rainforests. Common plant species include the Antarctic beech, snow gums, and towering blue gums, as well as a lush understory of tree ferns and mosses. The park is known for its pristine rainforest landscapes, which are remnants of ancient Gondwana. One of the park’s standout features is the Bellinger River, which winds through the park, offering opportunities for fishing and scenic walks. Public transport to Cunnawarra National Park is not available, so visitors need to rely on private vehicles, preferably 4WD, to navigate the rough terrain and reach the park’s remote areas.
