Pukaskwa National Park is located in northern Ontario, Canada, along the shores of Lake Superior. The nearest towns are Marathon, Ontario, and Heron Bay, providing access to this remote wilderness. The park, established in 1978, was created to preserve a significant portion of boreal forest and Lake Superior's rugged shoreline, making it Ontario's only wilderness national park. Pukaskwa National Park features several parking areas, including a main lot at the Hattie Cove Visitor Centre, where visitors can access trails and facilities. Parking fees apply, and the park offers day-use passes as well as multi-day options. The park is home to a rich variety of wildlife. Common species include black bears, moose, and wolves. The waters of Lake Superior attract numerous bird species, including bald eagles and great blue herons. Pukaskwa is also notable for its population of woodland caribou, a species at risk, which roam the more remote parts of the park. The park's flora is equally impressive, with vast expanses of boreal forest dominated by black spruce, jack pine, and white birch. The rocky shoreline is covered in mosses, lichens, and wildflowers, including the rare ram's head lady slipper. One of the park's most iconic landmarks is the White River Suspension Bridge, which offers stunning views of the river gorge below. The Coastal Hiking Trail, which stretches over 60 kilometers along the rugged shore, is another highlight for adventurers seeking a backcountry experience. Public transport to Pukaskwa National Park is limited, so visitors typically drive from nearby towns such as Marathon. Once there, the park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and canoeing, providing an immersive wilderness experience.
