Auyuittuq National Park is located on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada, and stretches across the Arctic Circle. The closest communities to the park are Pangnirtung and Qikiqtarjuaq. "Auyuittuq" means "the land that never melts" in Inuktitut, fitting for its landscape of rugged mountains, glaciers, and ice fields. Established in 1976 as a national park, Auyuittuq was designed to protect the stunning Arctic wilderness of the Cumberland Peninsula. This region is significant to Inuit culture and has been inhabited for thousands of years. The park’s dramatic scenery includes towering peaks like Mount Thor, with the world's tallest vertical cliff, and Mount Asgard, an iconic twin-peaked mountain. Due to its remote location, Auyuittuq National Park lacks traditional parking facilities. Visitors arrive via the nearby towns of Pangnirtung and Qikiqtarjuaq, which can be reached by plane from Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut. From there, access to the park is usually by boat, snowmobile, or on foot. There are no parking fees or formal parking lots. Wildlife in Auyuittuq National Park is diverse, despite the harsh environment. Visitors may encounter Arctic foxes, wolves, polar bears, and lemmings. Marine mammals such as narwhals, seals, and bowhead whales inhabit the surrounding waters. Birdlife includes snowy owls, gyrfalcons, and various seabirds. The flora of Auyuittuq consists mainly of Arctic tundra vegetation, including mosses, lichens, and low-growing plants like Arctic heather and purple saxifrage, which bloom in the brief Arctic summer. Landmarks within the park include the Akshayuk Pass, a popular route for backpackers, and the Penny Ice Cap, a massive glacier. No public transport exists to the park, so visitors must arrange private transportation through local outfitters or guides in Pangnirtung or Qikiqtarjuaq.
