Grasslands National Park is located in southern Saskatchewan, Canada, near the United States border. The park is divided into two main sections: the West Block near the village of Val Marie and the East Block closer to Wood Mountain. The nearest city is Swift Current, around a two-hour drive from the park. Established in 1981, Grasslands National Park protects one of the few remaining areas of natural mixed-grass prairie in North America. The park holds cultural significance for Indigenous peoples and played a role in the history of bison hunting and early ranching in Canada. The park offers several designated parking areas, with no additional parking fees beyond the park entrance pass. Parking lots can be found at key trailheads, campgrounds, and interpretive sites, making it easy for visitors to access the park’s various attractions. Grasslands National Park is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including plains bison, pronghorn antelope, black-tailed prairie dogs, and the endangered burrowing owl. The park is also known for hosting reintroduced black-footed ferrets, which had been considered extinct in Canada until their recent recovery efforts. The park’s flora is typical of the prairie ecosystem, with native grasses such as blue grama, needle-and-thread, and June grass dominating the landscape. Wildflowers, including prairie crocus and dotted blazing star, add bursts of color during the spring and summer months. Some of the park’s notable features include the Frenchman River Valley, the Killdeer Badlands, and 70 Mile Butte, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding prairies. The landscape is also rich in fossil beds, providing glimpses of ancient life that once roamed the area. Public transportation options to the park are limited. Most visitors drive to the park via nearby towns such as Val Marie or Swift Current, which provide access to Grasslands National Park.
