Point Pelee National Park is located in southern Ontario, Canada, on the northern shore of Lake Erie. It is near the town of Leamington and the city of Windsor. This park is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the lake, forming one of the southernmost points of mainland Canada. Established in 1918, Point Pelee National Park was created to protect its unique ecosystem, making it one of Canada’s oldest national parks. Its location in the Great Lakes region makes it a critical stopover for migratory birds, and it has a rich history of conservation and birdwatching. Parking facilities at the park are well-structured, with multiple lots near key areas such as the Visitor Centre, Marsh Boardwalk, and the tip of Point Pelee. Parking fees are applicable, and visitors can pay on-site. During peak seasons, the park offers shuttle services to reduce congestion near the tip. Point Pelee is renowned for its diverse wildlife, particularly its bird species. The park is one of North America’s premier birdwatching destinations, with over 390 species recorded, including warblers, hawks, and waterfowl. Other notable animals include white-tailed deer, raccoons, and the endangered eastern foxsnake. Monarch butterflies also pass through the park during their migration to Mexico. The flora of the park features a mixture of Carolinian forest, swamp forest, and coastal dune ecosystems. The area is home to several rare plant species, such as the prickly pear cactus, red mulberry, and eastern flowering dogwood. Key landmarks include the Marsh Boardwalk, with its expansive views over wetlands, and the tip of Point Pelee, where Lake Erie’s waters meet in stunning fashion. Public transportation options are limited, so most visitors arrive by car, though cycling routes and local taxi services are available from nearby Leamington.
