Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is located in the southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada. Spread across several islands between Vancouver Island and the mainland, it encompasses key sections of the archipelago. The park's nearby cities and towns include Sidney, Victoria, and Vancouver, with several smaller communities on the islands themselves, such as Galiano, Pender, and Mayne Islands. The park was established in 2003 to protect the unique ecosystems and cultural heritage of the Gulf Islands. These islands have long been inhabited by Indigenous peoples, and the park protects important archaeological and cultural sites, in addition to natural landscapes. Parking facilities are available at various access points on the islands, particularly near ferry terminals, trailheads, and popular camping areas. As the park is made up of many islands, parking fees and availability vary by location. Some islands are car-free, requiring visitors to leave vehicles behind and explore on foot, by bike, or via water taxis. Gulf Islands National Park is a haven for wildlife, particularly marine species. It is home to orcas, seals, sea lions, and porpoises, as well as numerous seabird species like oystercatchers, cormorants, and bald eagles. Terrestrial wildlife includes black-tailed deer, raccoons, and various amphibians. The park’s flora is diverse, ranging from arbutus and Douglas fir trees to delicate wildflowers and rare Garry oak ecosystems. These unique plant communities thrive in the islands' Mediterranean-like climate. Notable features of the park include scenic coastlines, rocky bluffs, sheltered coves, and beaches. Visitors can enjoy activities like kayaking, hiking, and wildlife viewing, with notable sites including Mount Norman on South Pender Island and Saturna Island’s East Point. Public transportation to the park includes BC Ferries, which provide access to the islands from Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Additionally, water taxis and floatplanes offer alternatives for getting to more remote locations within the park.
