Nationalpark Kalkalpen is located in Austria, in the Upper Austria region. It covers an extensive area of 208 square kilometers within the Northern Limestone Alps. The park is situated between the cities of Linz and Steyr, with nearby towns such as Molln and Windischgarsten. This national park is a prime example of Austria’s diverse mountain landscape. The park was established in 1997 to protect the unique limestone landscape and old-growth forests, many of which had been untouched for centuries. It also aimed to preserve the rich biodiversity and geological features of the area, making it one of Austria’s most important conservation areas. Parking facilities in Nationalpark Kalkalpen are available at key entrances and visitor centers, such as in Molln and Reichraming. The parking areas are well-marked, and fees may apply in certain zones. Some areas may have restrictions to protect the natural environment, so visitors are encouraged to follow posted rules. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife species. Notable animals include the lynx, which has been successfully reintroduced, as well as red deer, chamois, and golden eagles. The park's rivers and streams support populations of brown trout and other freshwater fish. Its diverse habitats provide important refuge for many bird species, especially in the forested regions. The flora of Nationalpark Kalkalpen is equally impressive, with extensive beech, fir, and spruce forests. Rare alpine flowers such as the Edelweiss and gentians can be found in higher altitudes. The park’s natural meadows also host a variety of wildflowers in the summer months. Public transportation options are available, including bus services from surrounding towns. There are also cycling paths and hiking trails that connect to the park, making it accessible for visitors traveling without a car. Photo Credit: Isiwal and AndiFuer
