Bowling Green Bay National Park is located in Queensland, Australia, about 25 kilometers southeast of Townsville. It is situated in the northern part of the state, in a coastal region that transitions from wetlands to mountain ranges. The nearby towns include Giru and Alligator Creek, which provide access points to different sections of the park. The park was established in 1977 and is known for its diverse ecosystems, ranging from mangroves and coastal plains to the forested hills of the Mount Elliot massif. It plays an important role in conserving wetlands that are critical for local and migratory bird species, as well as protecting the unique biodiversity of the region. Bowling Green Bay National Park has several designated parking areas, mainly located near walking tracks and picnic spots like the Alligator Creek day-use area. Parking is generally free, but visitors are asked to follow designated spots to avoid damaging sensitive habitats. The park is home to an array of wildlife, including the estuarine crocodile, common in the wetland areas, and the agile wallaby, often seen in the grasslands. Birdlife is abundant, with species such as the brolga and the jabiru being highlights. The park also provides sanctuary for rare and endangered species like the mahogany glider. The flora within Bowling Green Bay National Park varies significantly, with mangroves lining the coastal areas, while eucalyptus woodlands and lush rainforest can be found on the slopes of Mount Elliot. Notable plant species include bloodwoods, wattles, and pandanus. Mount Elliot, the park’s dominant feature, rises to 1,222 meters and offers spectacular views and hiking opportunities. The wetlands, which are part of Bowling Green Bay, are internationally recognized for their importance to waterbirds. Public transport is limited, so most visitors travel by private vehicle, though organized tours may also be available from Townsville.
