Kamay Botany Bay National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, straddling the southern and northern headlands of Botany Bay, about 14 km south of Sydney's central business district. The park spans the suburbs of Kurnell and La Perouse, with Sydney being the nearest major city and Cronulla the closest town. The park holds deep historical significance, as it was the site of the first recorded European landing on Australia’s east coast by Captain James Cook in 1770. Established in 1988 as a national park, Kamay Botany Bay is a symbol of both colonial history and Aboriginal heritage, with special recognition of the Gweagal and Kameygal peoples, who are the traditional custodians of the land. Parking facilities are available at key locations, including the Visitor Centre at Kurnell and near Cape Solander. Fees for parking are around AUD 8 per vehicle per day, payable at entry stations. There are multiple car parks, including those near the beach and picnic areas, with some offering wheelchair accessibility. The park is home to various native wildlife species. Eastern water dragons and swamp wallabies are commonly seen, while humpback whales can be spotted during their migration season from the Cape Solander lookout. Birdwatchers might also encounter the white-bellied sea eagle and little penguins along the coast. Kamay Botany Bay’s flora includes coastal heathland, banksias, and eucalyptus trees, with unique species like the Sydney red gum and the fragrant flannel flower. Notable landmarks include Captain Cook’s Landing Place, Cape Solander for whale watching, and Bare Island, a historic military fort. Public transport options are available, with buses from Sydney and nearby train stations offering easy access to both the La Perouse and Kurnell sections of the park.
