Abercrombie River National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, approximately 240 kilometers west of Sydney. The park is situated between the towns of Oberon, Goulburn, and Taralga. This rugged wilderness is known for its deep gorges, diverse habitats, and the picturesque Abercrombie River that flows through the park's center. Established in 1995, Abercrombie River National Park was created to protect its unique landscapes, including the river system and surrounding ecosystems. The park is named after the Abercrombie River, which was discovered by European explorers in 1815 and remains the park's main feature. Historically, the park area was used for grazing and mining, but today it serves as a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. The park has several parking facilities located at key sites, including the Bummaroo Ford camping area and Silent Creek campground. Parking is free, but spaces may be limited during peak periods. Some areas of the park are accessible by 4WD vehicles only, especially during wet conditions, so it is essential to plan ahead. Abercrombie River National Park is home to various native wildlife species. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and red-necked wallabies are commonly seen. Birdlife is abundant, with species like the peregrine falcon, gang-gang cockatoo, and the vulnerable glossy black cockatoo being highlights. The park also shelters several reptile species, including the eastern brown snake. The park's flora is diverse, with eucalyptus forests, box gum woodlands, and riverbank vegetation. Unique species such as the red stringybark and ribbon gum are prominent in the area, along with dense shrubs and grasses along the riverbanks. Notable features include the Abercrombie River, its tributaries, and the steep gorges and hills that provide excellent hiking and scenic views. Public transport options to Abercrombie River National Park are minimal, so driving is the primary way to access the park from nearby towns or Sydney.
