Nowendoc National Park is located in the Northern Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. Situated approximately 70 km southwest of the town of Walcha and about 160 km from the city of Tamworth, the park is a remote wilderness area known for its rugged beauty. The nearest towns include Nowendoc, Walcha, and Gloucester. Nowendoc National Park was established in 1999 to protect its diverse ecosystems and pristine natural environment. Historically, the region has been used by the indigenous people of the Biripi and Nganyaywana nations for thousands of years. The park has also seen limited European settlement in the 19th and 20th centuries, with some early pastoral activity in the area. Parking within Nowendoc National Park is limited, with only one main parking area near the park's entrance. There are no entry fees for the park, but visitors are encouraged to park in designated areas to minimize environmental impact. The park is home to a variety of native wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, and the iconic koala. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting species such as the wedge-tailed eagle, lyrebird, and superb fairy-wren. Rare reptiles like the broad-headed snake also inhabit the park. Nowendoc’s flora is dominated by towering eucalyptus forests, particularly New England blackbutt and snow gums. The park's unique vegetation includes rare rainforest pockets and areas of grassland that provide habitat for diverse plant species. Key landmarks include Nowendoc River, which flows through the park, creating stunning gorges and waterfalls. The park’s rugged terrain also features several lookout points that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. There is no public transportation available directly to Nowendoc National Park, so visitors must drive or arrange private transport to access the park. Photo Credit: John Spencer
