Camooweal Caves National Park is located in Queensland, Australia, near the Northern Territory border. It lies about 15 kilometers southeast of the small town of Camooweal and approximately 190 kilometers northwest of Mount Isa, a larger regional center. This park is set within the remote, rugged terrain of the Barkly Tableland. The park was established in 1988 to protect its unique karst landscapes, including a network of limestone caves formed millions of years ago. The caves are an important feature of the park, and while most are not accessible to the public for safety reasons, they are a key part of the park’s geological history. Parking facilities in the park are limited but sufficient for the number of visitors. There are a few designated parking areas near the main walking trails and viewpoints. No parking fees apply, though visitors are advised to follow any posted rules to help conserve the park’s natural features. Camooweal Caves National Park is home to a range of native wildlife. Notable species include the eastern grey kangaroo, red kangaroo, and the rare ghost bat. Birdwatchers might spot species like the Australian bustard and the black-breasted buzzard, both commonly seen soaring over the park’s open landscape. The park’s flora consists mostly of spinifex grasslands, acacias, and eucalyptus trees. The vegetation is adapted to the arid environment, providing a stark but beautiful backdrop to the rugged terrain. The most notable features of the park are its limestone caves and sinkholes, which form part of an extensive underground system. These caves have cultural significance for the local Indigenous people. Public transport to Camooweal Caves National Park is not available, so visitors must travel by private vehicle or organized tour from nearby towns like Camooweal or Mount Isa.
