Djukbinj National Park is located in the Northern Territory, Australia, approximately 65 kilometers east of Darwin. The park lies within the Top End region, nestled between the Adelaide River and the Mary River wetlands. It forms part of the expansive floodplains that are renowned for their ecological diversity and cultural significance. The park was established in 1997 to protect the wetland ecosystems that support a wide range of wildlife and to preserve the cultural heritage of the local Limilngan-Wulna Aboriginal people. The area has been an important hunting and gathering ground for the Aboriginal community for thousands of years, and their connection to the land is still evident in the region. Parking facilities in Djukbinj National Park are minimal, as it is a remote and largely undeveloped natural area. Visitors can park at designated spots along the main access roads, which are suitable for 2WD vehicles during the dry season. However, parts of the park may be inaccessible during the wet season due to flooding. There are no parking fees. The park is a haven for wildlife, particularly bird species. It is part of the Mary River Wetlands, which attract thousands of waterbirds, including magpie geese, egrets, jabirus, and brolgas. Saltwater crocodiles are also commonly found in the park’s waterways, alongside turtles and a variety of fish species. Djukbinj’s flora is dominated by wetlands, with extensive patches of paperbark trees, water lilies, and floodplain grasses. These habitats support both the wildlife and the traditional bush food resources used by the local Aboriginal communities. Significant landmarks include the extensive wetlands themselves, which offer prime birdwatching opportunities, and the nearby Mary River, known for its crocodile populations. There is no public transport to Djukbinj National Park, so visitors must drive from Darwin or nearby towns such as Humpty Doo.
