Gulaga National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, in the southeastern region near the Sapphire Coast. The park is situated around the town of Tilba Tilba and is close to the coastal towns of Narooma and Bermagui, making these the nearest access points for visitors. Established in 2001, Gulaga National Park holds deep cultural significance for the local Yuin Aboriginal people. The park centers around Gulaga Mountain (formerly known as Mount Dromedary), which is considered a sacred site for the Yuin people, symbolizing spiritual and cultural identity. The land was returned to the Yuin people as part of a co-management agreement, acknowledging its traditional custodianship. Parking facilities in Gulaga National Park are available at the Tilba Tilba car park, which serves as the main access point for those wishing to hike the Gulaga Mountain track. Parking is free, and there are no entry fees to the park. However, visitors should be prepared for a steep, challenging climb up the mountain, which can take several hours. The park is home to a range of native wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, and various bird species such as lyrebirds, cockatoos, and parrots. The forests surrounding the mountain provide a rich habitat for reptiles and amphibians, including tree frogs and skinks. Gulaga National Park’s flora is dominated by dense eucalypt forests, with species such as blackbutt and blue gum. Rainforest patches near the mountain’s summit feature native ferns and tree species like sassafras and corkwood. The diversity of plant life is reflective of the park’s varying altitudes and environments. The most notable feature of the park is Gulaga Mountain itself, which offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the coastline. The mountain is also home to several Aboriginal cultural sites. Public transport to Gulaga National Park is limited, with driving being the most practical option for visitors.
