Lizard Island National Park is located in Queensland, Australia, approximately 240 km north of Cairns, within the Great Barrier Reef. The park consists of several islands, the largest of which is Lizard Island itself, sitting around 27 km off the coast from Cape Flattery. The closest town is Cooktown, about 90 km to the southwest, while Cairns is the nearest major city. The park was established in 1939 to protect the natural ecosystems and significant marine life of the islands. Lizard Island holds cultural significance for the Dingaal Aboriginal people, who named it "Jiigurru." Captain James Cook named it Lizard Island in 1770 after noticing numerous large lizards (Gould’s sand monitors) inhabiting the island. Parking on Lizard Island is limited as it is primarily accessible by boat or plane. There are no car parking facilities on the island itself, and visitors typically arrive via small chartered flights or private boats. As such, there are no fees or rules associated with parking vehicles on the island. The park is home to a wide array of native wildlife. Notable species include the monitor lizard (from which the island gets its name), green sea turtles, and dugongs. Birdlife is abundant, including ospreys and terns. The marine life around the island is remarkable, with numerous coral species and fish inhabiting the surrounding reefs. Lizard Island features a mix of coastal vegetation, with hardy grasses, acacias, and eucalyptus trees. Notable features include the island’s highest point, Cook's Look, which offers panoramic views. Public transport does not service the park directly; visitors must arrange private transport, with small flights available from Cairns or boat transfers from Cooktown. Photo Credit: Luka Peternel
