Nymboi-Binderay National Park is located in northern New South Wales, Australia, approximately 60 km west of the coastal town of Coffs Harbour. Nestled within the Dorrigo Plateau, the park is known for its lush rainforests and the rushing Nymboida River. Nearby towns include Dorrigo, Nymboida, and Grafton. The park was established in 1997, aiming to protect its diverse ecosystems and cultural heritage. Historically, the area holds significance for the Gumbaynggirr people, the traditional custodians of the land. The park also has a history of timber harvesting, which ceased before its establishment as a protected area. Today, it serves as a refuge for both wildlife and recreational visitors. Nymboi-Binderay National Park has several parking facilities. Visitors can park at Platypus Flat or The Junction, the two main access points, where camping and picnicking areas are available. There are no entry fees, but camping fees may apply in certain areas. Visitors are asked to use designated parking spots to preserve the environment. The park is a haven for native wildlife, including eastern grey kangaroos, koalas, and the elusive platypus, which can be spotted in the river's calmer sections. Birdlife is abundant, with species such as the white-bellied sea eagle, regent bowerbird, and satin bowerbird frequently seen. Flora within the park includes dense subtropical rainforest species, dominated by hoop pines, coachwood, and sassafras. Along the riverbanks, tree ferns and mosses thrive, adding to the lush atmosphere. Key landmarks include the Nymboida River, famous for white-water rafting, and the park’s stunning rainforest walking trails. Scenic lookouts provide views of dramatic gorges and dense forested valleys. Public transport does not reach Nymboi-Binderay National Park, so visitors must drive or arrange private transportation to access the park. Photo Credit: Jay Clark
