Goobang National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, in the state's Central West region. It lies about 30 kilometers northeast of Parkes and 50 kilometers south of Dubbo, with the nearby towns of Peak Hill and Manildra also providing access points. Established in 1995, the park covers over 42,000 hectares of the Hervey Range. Its establishment aimed to conserve the area’s diverse habitats and rich Aboriginal heritage, particularly that of the Wiradjuri people, who have a long-standing cultural connection to the land. Prior to becoming a national park, the land was used for grazing and logging, which altered much of its natural landscape. Parking in Goobang National Park is readily available at key entry points, particularly around the Wanda Wandong and Greenbah Creek campgrounds. These areas offer convenient access to walking trails and picnic spots. While parking is generally free, camping permits are required for overnight stays, with a small fee charged for bookings. The park is a haven for native wildlife. Visitors may spot eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and koalas, while birdwatchers can observe wedge-tailed eagles, rosellas, and the endangered swift parrot. Reptiles like goannas and various skinks also inhabit the area, and rocky outcrops provide shelter for the elusive brush-tailed rock wallaby. Goobang National Park’s flora includes woodlands dominated by eucalypts such as white box, grey box, and ironbark. The drier areas feature native cypress pine, while golden wattle and native wildflowers brighten the landscape, particularly in spring. Notable landmarks include Mount Goobang, the highest point in the park, offering panoramic views. Several walking trails lead through the park’s woodlands and rugged hills, providing a range of hiking options. Public transportation to the park is limited, so driving is the most reliable way to access the park. Photo Credit: Amanda Lavende
