Cascade National Park is located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia, about 40 km northwest of Coffs Harbour and near the small town of Cascade. It lies within the hinterland of the Great Dividing Range, characterized by its rugged terrain and lush rainforests. The park was established in 1999 to conserve its rich biodiversity and important rainforest ecosystems. Historically, the area was logged extensively, but since its establishment as a national park, it has been preserved as a haven for wildlife and plant species. The park also protects sections of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, underscoring its environmental significance. Parking facilities in Cascade National Park are minimal, as the park remains largely undeveloped. Access is typically via unsealed roads, with informal parking areas near hiking trailheads and camping sites. There are no parking fees, and facilities within the park are basic, so visitors are advised to be self-sufficient. The park is home to a variety of native wildlife. Commonly seen animals include eastern grey kangaroos, brushtail possums, and sugar gliders. The park’s rainforests also provide habitat for an array of bird species, including the elusive paradise riflebird, regent bowerbird, and lyrebird. Reptiles such as lace monitors and pythons are also present. Cascade National Park features diverse flora, with subtropical and temperate rainforests being the dominant vegetation. Tree species such as coachwood, tallowwood, and hoop pine are common, while the understorey is filled with ferns, orchids, and vines. Notable features within the park include pristine creeks and waterfalls, as well as scenic forested ridges that offer stunning views. Public transport options to Cascade National Park are very limited, so visitors generally need to drive, with access from nearby towns such as Dorrigo or Coffs Harbour. Photo Credit: Robert Cleary
