Iytwelepenty / Davenport Range National Park is located in the Northern Territory, Australia, about 380 kilometers northeast of Alice Springs and 200 kilometers southeast of Tennant Creek. The park covers an area of 1,120 square kilometers and is part of the arid Davenport Range, offering a blend of stunning desert landscapes, rugged ranges, and significant cultural sites. The park was established in 1993 to protect the unique ecosystems and the cultural heritage of the region’s traditional custodians, the Warumungu, Alyawarre, and Kaytetye peoples. It is known for its historical Aboriginal significance, with ancient ceremonial sites and rock art scattered throughout the park. Parking facilities in the park are limited due to its remote location and rugged terrain. There are informal parking areas near Old Police Station Waterhole and Whistleduck Creek, which are the main camping and picnic spots. Visitors must bring their own supplies, and no fees are required for parking, though camping fees apply at designated sites. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including red kangaroos, spinifex pigeons, and perentie lizards. The area is also important for birdlife, with species such as the grey falcon, Australian bustard, and the endangered painted finch frequently spotted. Iytwelepenty’s flora includes spinifex grasslands, acacia woodlands, and river red gums along creek beds. Desert wildflowers bloom after rain, adding vibrant colors to the arid landscape. Notable landmarks include the Old Police Station Waterhole, an oasis-like spot with permanent water, and the Davenport Ranges themselves, which offer dramatic views of the surrounding desert. The park is also known for its Aboriginal rock art and cultural sites. There is no public transport available to the park. Access is by 4WD vehicles only, with visitors typically driving from Tennant Creek or Alice Springs along unsealed roads.
