Out and Back
“Climb from shaded foothills to breezy ridgeline panoramas over Layton and the Great Salt Lake.”
This medium-rated ridge walk is a great “half-day” option: about 6 km (3.7 mi) with roughly 100 m (330 ft) of climbing, starting from the well-used trailhead at Fernwood Recreation Site on Layton’s east bench. Expect a mix of shaded foothill singletrack, short steeper pitches, and open ridge segments where the views expand quickly over Layton, the Great Salt Lake, and the Wasatch Front.
Nearest known address / landmark for the start: Fernwood Recreation Site, 3333 Fernwood Cir, Layton, UT 84040. (mapquest.com)
This is also commonly described as being just past/near the local landmark often nicknamed the “Layton Castle,” with the Forest Service picnic area/trailhead immediately nearby. (summitpost.org)
By car
- Navigate to Fernwood Recreation Site (3333 Fernwood Cir) and park in the Forest Service lot. On pleasant weekends it can fill early because multiple trails connect here. (summitpost.org)
- Facilities are a big plus at this trailhead: you’ll typically find restrooms and water at/near the picnic area, which is helpful for a shorter ridge hike where you may still want to top off before heading up. (summitpost.org)
By public transport - Public transit can get you into Layton, but the last stretch up to Fernwood is on the foothill edge and is not always a simple “step-off-the-bus” trailhead. Plan for a rideshare/taxi or a longer walk for the final miles. Before you go, check current routing and stops for Layton on the local transit provider’s trip planner (routes and schedules change seasonally).
From the picnic area/trailhead, you’ll ease in on a well-established path that quickly transitions into foothill terrain—think packed dirt with small rocks, occasional roots, and short sandy/gravelly patches. The grade is generally moderate, matching the overall ~100 m (330 ft) gain, but you’ll still encounter a few brief ramps where you’ll feel the climb in your calves.
A good way to pace it is to think in thirds:
Use HiiKER to confirm the exact junctions and any short connector segments you choose—this area has multiple intersecting routes, and it’s easy to follow the “most worn” track and end up on a different connector than intended.
Views and ridgeline openings - As you gain the ridge, the landscape opens toward the west. On clear days, the Great Salt Lake becomes a dominant landmark, and sunset light can be especially strong across the valley. (Even on a short hike, sunglasses help.)
Foothill vegetation - Expect classic Wasatch Front lower-elevation plant communities: scrub oak and other drought-tolerant shrubs are common, with seasonal wildflowers in spring and early summer. Scrub oak can narrow the corridor in places and may brush your legs—long socks can be more comfortable.
Wildlife - Common sightings in these foothills include mule deer and a variety of birds of prey riding thermals along the ridge. In warmer months, treat this as rattlesnake country: stay on-trail, watch where you place hands/feet near rocks, and give any snake plenty of space.
