The trail begins with a gentle ascent through dense forest, offering a mix of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red cedar trees. Mordor Section: Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll enter the Mordor section, known for its rugged terrain and rocky outcrops. This part of the trail is more challenging, with steeper inclines and uneven surfaces. Keep an eye out for the unique basalt formations that give this section its name. The elevation gain here is about 150 meters (492 feet) over 2 km (1.2 miles).
Twisted Sister Section: At approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), you'll transition into the Twisted Sister section. This part of the trail is characterized by its winding paths and dense underbrush. The trail here is narrower and requires careful navigation. Use the HiiKER app to stay on track, as the twists and turns can be disorienting. The elevation gain in this section is around 50 meters (164 feet) over 1.5 km (0.9 miles).
The trail is rich in biodiversity. You may encounter black-tailed deer, raccoons, and a variety of bird species such as the Pacific wren and the northern flicker. The underbrush is thick with ferns, salal, and Oregon grape, adding to the lush, green scenery.
The area around Kitsap County has a rich history, with Native American tribes such as the Suquamish and Duwamish having inhabited the region for thousands of years. The trail itself passes through lands that were historically used for hunting and gathering. Keep an eye out for interpretive signs along the trail that provide more information about the cultural significance of the area.
The last 2.5 km (1.5 miles) of the trail loop back towards the trailhead, offering a gradual descent. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to cool down and enjoy the serene environment. The final stretch takes you through a mixed forest with occasional clearings that offer glimpses of the surrounding landscape.
