“Embark on a 10 km journey with lush forests, historical landmarks, and breathtaking views at Squak Mountain.”
Starting your adventure near King County, Washington, the Squak Mountain West Peak and May Valley Loop offers a rewarding 10 km (6.2 miles) journey with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters (1,968 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Issaquah Alps and park at the Squak Mountain State Park parking lot, located near the intersection of SE May Valley Road and SE 112th Street. For those using public transport, take a bus to Issaquah Transit Center and then a short taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.
Starting from the parking lot, the trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forest. Make sure to have the HiiKER app downloaded for accurate navigation and real-time updates. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) will take you through dense woodland, where you can spot native flora like sword ferns and western red cedars.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll begin the more strenuous climb towards Squak Mountain's West Peak. This section is steep and rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you ascend, keep an eye out for viewpoints offering glimpses of the surrounding Issaquah Alps and, on clear days, the distant Olympic Mountains.
After reaching the West Peak, the trail descends into the May Valley Loop. This section is less steep but still offers a good workout. The descent is around 2 km (1.2 miles) and takes you through a mix of second-growth forest and open meadows. Here, you might encounter local wildlife such as black-tailed deer and various bird species, including woodpeckers and owls.
Squak Mountain has a rich history, once home to logging operations in the early 20th century. Remnants of old logging roads and equipment can still be seen along the trail, offering a glimpse into the area's past. The mountain is also part of the traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples, who have lived in the region for thousands of years.
The last 3 km (1.9 miles) of the loop bring you back through serene forested areas, eventually leading you back to the parking lot. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to cool down and enjoy the natural beauty around you.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to bring plenty of water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Weather can be unpredictable, so layers are recommended. Always check trail conditions on HiiKER before heading out, and let someone know your hiking plans for safety.
This trail offers a balanced mix of challenging climbs, historical insights, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
