“An invigorating 10-kilometer hike through lush forests, alpine meadows, and historic landmarks near Salt Lake County.”
Starting near Salt Lake County, Utah, the Lake Martha and Lake Mary via Catherines Pass Trail is an invigorating out-and-back hike that spans approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Brighton Ski Resort area, which is a well-known landmark. The trailhead is located near the resort, and ample parking is available. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to the Brighton Ski Resort, which is serviced by several routes from Salt Lake City.
The trail begins with a steady ascent through a lush forest of aspen and pine trees. Early on, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that help to manage the elevation gain. The initial 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) will bring you to a more open area where the forest gives way to alpine meadows. This section is particularly beautiful in late spring and early summer when wildflowers are in full bloom.
At around the 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) mark, you'll reach Lake Martha, a serene alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Continuing on, the trail ascends further towards Lake Mary. The climb becomes a bit steeper here, but the views are worth the effort. Lake Mary is located approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the trailhead and sits at a higher elevation, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
The area is rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for deer, marmots, and various bird species. The lakes themselves are home to trout, and you might even spot an eagle or osprey fishing. The flora is equally impressive, with a mix of coniferous trees and vibrant wildflowers.
The region has a rich history tied to the early settlers and the mining industry. The Brighton area was once a bustling mining community, and remnants of this history can still be seen along the trail. Old mining equipment and cabins occasionally dot the landscape, offering a glimpse into the past.
For navigation, it’s highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and ensure you stay on the right path.
The return journey follows the same path, allowing you to enjoy the views from a different perspective. The descent is generally easier, but still requires caution, especially on the steeper sections near Lake Mary.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for hikers in the Salt Lake County area.
