Loop
A fascinating and beautiful walk across the North Downs to Langley Vale Wood created by the Woodland Trust. There are pockets of ancient woodland, vibrant poppy fields and meadows in summer, along with stunning views. The woods are designed as a living memorial to those who sacrificed so much in the First World War and are situated on original training grounds for troops going off to battle.
The route includes sculptures and information about World War 1 and those who fought including The Regiment of Trees which consists of twelve figures, representing some of the volunteers inspected by Lord Kitchener on Epsom Downs in 1915. Nearby is Witness, a large sculpture by John Merrill featuring war poetry. There is also a memorial to the Battle of Jutland and Cherry Avenue, with trees bearing boards which tell the stories of local soldiers.
Easy loop of about 6 miles starting and ending near 51.29095, -0.2359, ideal for a relaxed half‑day walk. The route gently rolls through the countryside with roughly 515 ft of total elevation gain and 598 ft of descent, offering mild ups and downs but no tough climbs. Suitable for most fitness levels.
