It was back to the higher peaks today and we ticked off the rest of the five highest peaks in the Cambrian Mountains on this 8.5Mile / 13.6 km route along a few other unnamed peaks and we most definitely bagged the source of the Wye although it is not marked in the same way as the source of the Severn is.
We had intended to do this route from Nant y Moch Reservoir however, we both didn't fancy the long road / track section to get cross country.
So after a quick recce we opted to head back round to Eisteddfa Gurig. Parking here is £5 all day by honesty box! There are no facilities though. If you have dogs, please keep them on a lead especially at this time of year until you hit the higher slopes at least.
The local sheep farmer was totally happy with mine off up high but did ask that we put them back on the lead when descending, which of course we did. Just for info, I picked up a couple of rifle cases on the return leg!
That aside once leaving the car park and heading out onto open access ground, we went through the first gate and immediately looked to head up the boundary to Pen Lluest y Carn at 699m.
We crossed the boundary at 705m where it bends and then dropped into the top of the River Wye, heading up the last section until it turned to pooling water and marsh rather than flowing. Although not clear, i am pretty sure that was the Source.
From here we headed back up NNE crossing the boundary, the BS and onto 720m. We then headed across the dried out Llyn to 724 and onto the cairn at 727m.
We continued on the Cambrian Way until 720m where we contoured around to avoid the steep crag, then dropping down to 668m and Pumlumon Fach (another named peak). we decided to take in the 650m Knoll too which gave great views of Nant y Moch. Its then steep up to the cairn (745m) and trig point (752m) of Pen Pumlumon Fawr.
We left the summit following the boundary initially then the path (Cambrian Way) onto 628m and then the edge of the forestry block, passing 640m and then up onto Y Garn at 684m.
Doubling back on ourselves from here and back onto familiar territory, past the masts, through the gates (dogs back on leads) and dropped back through the farm to the Car Park. Can’t wait to see the route profile for this one but here is the fly through: Source of the Wye & Peaks over 650m! https://www.relive.com/view/vQvyKn47g46
With 7 days walking on the bounce, the dogs shattered (though Millie did have a day off) and having ticked off the following 5 highest named peaks in the Cambrian’s over the last week:
