Lynton to County Gate Circular - Upper Limits UK

What a fantastic but long walk I have had today, I started my walk in Lynton and walked down to Lynmouth to pick up the South West Coast Path, there was also an event going on today and there were about 300 Trail runners which made my walk today so much slower as the path is narrow in places and had to keep stopping to let them pass.

I did go up to the mast and trig point at 302 on Contisbury Common. I was soon back on the path and was going to head to the lighthouse at Foreland Point however the footpath is non existent after about 100m as it is all scree so a change of plan and had to head off in a different direction.

I headed along the path for quite some way before coming to my point where I had to turn towards County Gate and my halfway point, the signs on the coast path are completely wrong and it was much further than I was expecting.

I stopped at the Cafe for a well needed rest and some lunch, I did have my own but you can get hot meals and snacks as well as ice creams and hot and cold drinks, there are also toilets and the cafe is dog friendly.

On my return I met with the trail runners again but carried on through Brendan, onto Rockford and then headed to Watersmeet, very pretty along by the river. Once at Watersmeet I had the choice of the river walk or the woodland walk back into Lynmouth so I chose the river walk, however they do not tell you at this point that that route is closed it wasn’t until I got over the river and down the road that I found this out with metal gates across the road.

I then had to go back the way I came or find another route.

I decided to take the path up to Myrtleberry Cleeve and then picked up the Tarka trail all the way back into Lynmouth then had the lovely hilly climb back up to Lynton.
