If I was was to do this route again I would definitely do it as a figure of eight. We met and started this from the Butterfly Visitor Centre (£10pp currently to enter) though the cafe and toilets here are closed and it does seem like Wales is shutting down!
From the car park we headed out along the road to pick up the path leading first NW then NE up through Coed Ty-Llywd and on to Hafodau Cottage. We stayed above the tree line here and onto Bwa Drain.
The path gets a little sketchy from here because of storm damage so just after the trashed cottage (ruins), initially go to the left of the boundary then cross to the right and stay right until you start to descend. Take your time here as it would be easy to turn and ankle or worse. Pick out the best signed route back down to the road (its here I would cross over the bridge for the figure of eight loop).
We continued on another short road section before heading back up to Pencnwch and back down to the Rheidol Waterfalls. Cross the footbridge here and head back up to meet the path that handrails the Afon Rheidol all the way back to the Dam. The weir proved a better place for lunch rather than the picnic area!
Once back at the Dam, cross the road bridge and then its a short leg back up to the car park. Wild fires have kept crews busy in the area over the last few days. With them practically under control, the Helicopter was due to come in to reach the places crews couldn't.
As we were leaving the area the first one was setting off! Here is todays route fly through: Cwm Rheidol Valley - Waterfalls & Woodland! https://www.relive.com/view/vE6J59x4LxO
