This challenging circular walk starts from Cow Green Reservoir Car Park and heads out across the wild open landscape of Upper Teesdale towards Cauldron Snout Waterfall.
The route first makes its way down towards the waterfall, where the terrain becomes much more difficult. The descent involves a steep scramble and great care is needed, especially in wet conditions, as the rocks can be very slippery. Around Cauldron Snout, the ground is rough, uneven and exposed, so this is not a walk to rush.
From there, the walk follows the River Tees along a rugged riverside section. This part of the route can be demanding, with rocky ground underfoot and some awkward footing in places. It is a spectacular stretch of landscape, but one that is best suited to confident walkers who are comfortable on challenging terrain.
After leaving the river, the route continues through more open ground before joining the long track back towards Cow Green Car Park. Although the final section is easier underfoot, it is still a long return through a remote upland setting.
This is a walk for experienced moorland hikers only. It is not suitable for beginners, pushchairs or anyone unsure on steep, slippery or rocky ground. Good footwear, care and confidence on rough terrain are essential.
