Started this one from the car park near Knoll Down and the Gallops on the A4 which is free. From here we headed SE to the Byway to cut across to the A361.
We could have done this Anti Clockwise so that the Gallops were open to walk across on the return but we wanted the sun on Lansdowne Monument and the near by White Horse. We did get lucky though as we were given permission to walk on the gallops in between the horses training.
We picked up the byway heading NW from the A361 until we hit the Ridgeway and the White Horse Trail. After 400m you need to look out for the gap that leads west over to the footpath down through Ranscombe Bottom. We continued west past South Farm and onto St Marys Church at Calstone Wellington.
From here we headed North. The Byway has been legally rerouted on a good path around to Calstone Mill. heading high above the reservoir until the track turns North. its then East up to Cherhill Monument (with views of the White Horse) and onto Cherhill Hill at 258m and the high point of today.
On leaving here, we headed NE down to pick up the Old Bath Road which leads back to the car park.
