Loop
“Bavarian lakes shimmer beneath alpine peaks, while forest scents and echoes of history enrich every step.”
Nestled in the heart of the Ostallgäu region of Bavaria, this scenic loop trail begins near the picturesque village of Füssen, just a short distance from the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the nearby Alatsee car park, or by public transport—take a regional train to Füssen station, then connect via local bus to Alatsee, which is the closest significant landmark to the start of your hike.Getting Started and NavigationThe loop covers approximately 2 km (about 1.2 miles) with a moderate elevation gain of around 100 metres (roughly 330 feet), making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence and route details, use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions.Lakeside Beauty and Forest TrailsShortly after setting out, the trail leads you through lush mixed forests typical of the Allgäu foothills, with the scent of pine and spruce filling the air. Within the first 0.5 km (0.3 miles), you’ll reach the tranquil shores of Mittersee, a small, clear lake surrounded by dense woodland. The water here is often mirror-still in the morning, reflecting the surrounding peaks and making for excellent photo opportunities.Continuing along the loop, the path gently ascends, offering glimpses of the Bavarian Alps through breaks in the trees. At about the 1 km (0.6 mile) mark, you’ll arrive at Obersee, another pristine mountain lake. This spot is a favorite for birdwatchers—look out for herons, kingfishers, and the occasional osprey. The area is also home to deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, so keep your eyes and ears open as you walk.Historical and Cultural HighlightsThe Ostallgäu region is steeped in history, with evidence of settlement dating back to Roman times. The nearby town of Füssen was an important stop on the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman road connecting Italy to southern Germany. The lakes themselves have long been a source of local legend, with stories of hidden treasures and mysterious creatures passed down through generations.Trail Conditions and PreparationThe trail surface is a mix of compacted earth and gravel, with some roots and rocks underfoot, especially near the lakeshores. Waterproof hiking boots are recommended, particularly after rain when sections can become muddy. The elevation gain is steady but not steep, making the loop manageable for families with older children or anyone comfortable with moderate inclines. There are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. The nearest restrooms and refreshments can be found at the Alatsee car park or in Füssen. The loop can be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour at a leisurely pace, but allow extra time to enjoy the lakes and take in the views. For those arriving by public transport, check local bus schedules in advance, as service to Alatsee can be limited outside peak tourist seasons. The area is popular on weekends and holidays, so consider an early start for a quieter experience.
