Loop
“Circle emerald waters and ancient legends beneath the Bavarian Alps, where forests and history intertwine.”
Nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, this 2 km (1.2 mile) loop trail begins near the scenic shores of Lake Alatsee, just outside the town of Füssen in the Ostallgäu district, Germany. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the Alatsee parking lot (Alatsee 1, 87629 Füssen). For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Füssen station, then board the local bus (line 71 or 73) toward Weißensee and disembark at the Alatsee stop, a short walk from the lake.Trail Experience and NavigationThe loop gently ascends through mixed forests, gaining approximately 100 metres (328 feet) in elevation. The path is well-marked and maintained, but sturdy footwear is recommended due to occasional rocky and root-strewn sections. Hikers can rely on HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, ensuring a smooth journey around the lake.Natural Highlights and WildlifeThe trail circles the emerald-green waters of Lake Alatsee, renowned for its striking color caused by unique algae and mineral content. Dense beech and spruce forests line the route, providing shade and a habitat for local wildlife such as red squirrels, woodpeckers, and, with luck, glimpses of roe deer. In spring and summer, wildflowers carpet the forest floor, while autumn brings a vibrant display of foliage.Landmarks and Points of InterestAt roughly the halfway point, a small lakeside clearing offers panoramic views across Alatsee, with the Allgäu Alps rising in the distance. Benches here provide a peaceful spot for a break. The southern shore features a historic lakeside inn, a popular rest stop for refreshments. Interpretive signs along the route share information about the lake’s unique ecology and the region’s history.Historical SignificanceLake Alatsee is steeped in local legend and wartime history. During World War II, the area was rumored to be a hiding place for Nazi gold, and divers have explored the lake’s mysterious depths for decades. The surrounding forests were once part of ancient trade routes connecting Bavaria with Tyrol, and the nearby town of Füssen is famous for its medieval castle and as the birthplace of violin making in Germany. With its manageable distance, moderate elevation gain, and rich natural and historical context, this loop offers a rewarding outing for hikers of all abilities.
