Starting near the historic town of Goslar in Germany, the Oderteich via Harzklub Weg trail offers a captivating journey through the Harz Mountains. This point-to-point trail spans approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), making it a moderately challenging hike suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Goslar and follow the signs to the Harz National Park. There are several parking areas near the trailhead. For those using public transport, Goslar is well-connected by train. From the Goslar train station, you can take a local bus that heads towards the Harz National Park, alighting at the nearest stop to the trailhead.
The trail is well-marked with signs from the Harzklub, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail begins near the Oderteich reservoir, a significant landmark in the region.
At the start of your hike, you'll encounter the Oderteich reservoir, one of the oldest reservoirs in Germany, built in 1715. This historical site was originally constructed to supply water to the mines in the region. The reservoir is surrounded by lush forests and offers picturesque views, making it a perfect spot for a brief pause before you embark on the trail.
As you progress along the trail, you'll traverse through dense forests of spruce and beech trees. The Harz Mountains are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including red deer, wild boar, and various bird species such as the black woodpecker and the Eurasian pygmy owl. Keep your eyes peeled for these creatures, especially during the quieter parts of the day.
Around the halfway point, approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the Rehberger Grabenhaus, an old mining house that has been converted into a small museum and café. This is an excellent spot to take a break, learn about the mining history of the Harz region, and enjoy some refreshments.
The trail features a gentle elevation gain of about 100 meters (328 feet), making it accessible for most hikers. The terrain is varied, with sections of well-maintained paths, rocky outcrops, and occasional muddy patches, especially after rain. Good hiking boots are recommended to navigate these diverse conditions comfortably.
As you approach the final stretch of the trail, the path descends slightly, leading you through more forested areas and eventually opening up to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The trail concludes near the town of Sankt Andreasberg, another historic mining town with charming architecture and several options for dining and accommodation.
The Harz region is steeped in history, particularly related to mining. The Oderteich reservoir and the Rehberger Grabenhaus are just two examples of the area's rich mining heritage. The Harz Mountains were once a major center for silver, lead, and copper mining, and remnants of this industrial past can be seen throughout the landscape.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
