“Explore a scenic 27 km loop through lush meadows, historic sites, and diverse wildlife near Chapel Stile.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Chapel Stile, Brathay and Holme Ground Loop via Rydal Water is a captivating 27 km (approximately 16.8 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 700 meters (about 2,297 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Chapel Stile, where parking is available. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Ambleside. From Ambleside, you can take a local bus to Chapel Stile, which is a short ride away.
The trail begins in Chapel Stile, a quaint village known for its traditional stone cottages and scenic views. As you set off, you'll traverse through lush meadows and woodlands, gradually ascending towards the Brathay area. The initial part of the trail is relatively gentle, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
Around 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Rydal Water, a serene lake surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. This area is rich in wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals. Keep an eye out for herons and kingfishers near the water's edge. The lake itself is a great spot for a short break, offering picturesque views and a peaceful atmosphere.
As you continue, you'll come across Rydal Mount, the former home of the famous poet William Wordsworth. This historic house and its beautifully maintained gardens are worth a visit if you have the time. Wordsworth lived here from 1813 until his death in 1850, and the area inspired much of his poetry.
The trail then leads you towards Brathay, where you'll encounter more challenging terrain. The elevation gain becomes more noticeable here, with steeper inclines and rocky paths. This section offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. The Brathay area is also known for its ancient woodlands, which are home to a variety of flora and fauna.
Given the varied terrain and elevation changes, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be incredibly helpful, especially in areas where the path may be less defined.
As you approach the final stretch of the loop, you'll descend back towards Chapel Stile. This part of the trail takes you through Holme Ground, a picturesque area with open fields and scattered farmhouses. The descent offers a gentle relief after the more strenuous sections, allowing you to enjoy the final views before completing the loop.
Throughout the hike, you'll have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, from red squirrels in the woodlands to deer grazing in the open fields. The diverse habitats along the trail support a rich ecosystem, making it a great hike for nature enthusiasts.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for hikers looking to explore the scenic landscapes of Westmorland and Furness.
