“Embark on a scenic, moderately challenging 14 km hike through stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant wildlife.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, this 14 km (approximately 8.7 miles) loop trail offers a moderately challenging hike with an elevation gain of around 900 meters (2,950 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale. For those using public transport, buses from Kendal or Ambleside can take you to the Langdale Valley, with a short walk to the trailhead.
The hike begins with a steady ascent through Mickleden Valley, a picturesque area flanked by rugged hills. After about 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll reach the base of Rossett Pike. The climb up Rossett Gill is steep and rocky, so take your time and enjoy the views. At around 4.5 km (2.8 miles), you'll arrive at Angle Tarn, a serene mountain tarn nestled in a glacial corrie. This is a great spot for a break and some photos.
Continuing from Angle Tarn, the trail ascends towards Bowfell, one of the highest peaks in the Lake District at 902 meters (2,959 feet). The path is well-marked but can be rocky and uneven. After another 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the summit of Bowfell. On a clear day, the panoramic views from here are breathtaking, offering sights of the Scafell range, the Langdale Pikes, and even the Isle of Man.
From Bowfell, the trail heads towards Esk Pike, another prominent peak standing at 885 meters (2,904 feet). The route between Bowfell and Esk Pike is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) and involves some scrambling over rocky terrain. Once you reach the summit of Esk Pike, take a moment to appreciate the stunning vistas of the surrounding fells and valleys.
The descent begins from Esk Pike, heading towards Ore Gap and then down to the valley floor. The path can be slippery, especially after rain, so watch your footing. After about 3 km (1.9 miles) of descent, you'll rejoin the path near Angle Tarn and follow the same route back to the trailhead.
The trail is rich in both flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for red deer, which are often seen grazing in the valleys, and peregrine falcons soaring above. The area is also home to a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months.
Historically, the region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and you may come across ancient cairns and stone circles. The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, where the trail begins, has a storied history dating back to the 19th century and has long been a favorite haunt for climbers and hikers.
Given the challenging terrain and variable weather conditions, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Always check the weather forecast before setting out and be prepared for sudden changes. Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first-aid kit, and make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots.
This trail offers a rewarding experience for those prepared to tackle its challenges, with stunning landscapes and rich history making it a memorable adventure.
