Starting near West Sussex, England, this 16 km (approximately 10 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of woodland, riverbanks, and historical landmarks. With an elevation gain of around 300 meters (approximately 984 feet), the trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the town of Arundel in West Sussex. The nearest significant landmark is Arundel Castle, a historic site worth visiting before or after your hike. For those using public transport, Arundel Railway Station is well-connected and just a short walk from the trailhead.
The loop begins near Arundel, leading you first into Rewell Wood. This ancient woodland is rich in biodiversity, featuring a variety of tree species such as oak, beech, and ash. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a plethora of bird species. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead.
As you delve deeper into Rewell Wood, the trail starts to undulate, offering a mix of gentle slopes and steeper inclines. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, creating a picturesque scene. Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter a small clearing with a bench, an ideal spot for a short break.
Continuing on, you'll transition into Heron Wood. This section is known for its dense canopy and serene atmosphere. The trail here is narrower and more rugged, so watch your footing. Heron Wood is also home to several small streams, which you’ll cross via wooden footbridges. Around the 8 km (5 miles) mark, you'll start to gain more elevation, with some sections becoming quite steep.
After exiting Heron Wood, the trail descends towards the River Arun. This part of the hike offers stunning river views and a chance to spot waterfowl and other aquatic wildlife. The path runs parallel to the river for about 3 km (1.9 miles), providing a relatively flat and easy walk. The riverbanks are often lined with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to your journey.
The area around the River Arun is steeped in history. Arundel Castle, visible from various points along the trail, dates back to the 11th century and has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 850 years. The castle and its grounds are open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into England's medieval past.
As you loop back towards Arundel, the trail takes you through a mix of open fields and smaller wooded areas. The final 3 km (1.9 miles) are relatively easy, with gentle slopes leading you back to the starting point. This section offers panoramic views of the South Downs, a fitting end to a diverse and rewarding hike.
For navigation, it’s highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
This loop trail offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and varied terrain, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring West Sussex.
