To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: Peaslake Village, Surrey. There is limited parking available near the village, so arriving early is advisable. For those using public transport, take a train to Guildford Station and then a bus to Peaslake Village. From the village, the trailhead is a short walk away.
For navigation, it’s highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will enhance your hiking experience.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through mixed woodland, where you’ll encounter a variety of native trees such as oak, beech, and birch. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), you’ll reach a small clearing that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. This is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos.
As you continue, you’ll come across remnants of ancient earthworks and boundary markers, hinting at the area’s historical significance. The Hurtwood has been a managed woodland for centuries, and you may even spot some old charcoal pits used in traditional iron smelting.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. In the spring and summer months, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers like bluebells and primroses.
At around the 2.5 km (1.55 miles) mark, you’ll reach Ashlands Copse, a denser section of the forest. This area is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold. The trail here can be a bit muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended.
The final stretch of the loop takes you through more open terrain, with occasional glimpses of the Surrey Hills in the distance. The descent back to Peaslake Village is gradual, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
