To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Wooler, which is the nearest significant landmark. From Wooler, follow the signs towards the Northumberland National Park. There is a small parking area near the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a bus to Wooler and then either walk or take a taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush, green meadows, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Northumberland countryside. As you progress, the path becomes steeper, leading you towards West Hill Fort. This section of the trail is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) from the start and involves an elevation gain of about 100 meters (328 feet).
West Hill Fort is an ancient hill fort dating back to the Iron Age. The fort's strategic location offers stunning views of the Cheviot Hills and the surrounding valleys. Take a moment to explore the remnants of the fort's defensive structures and imagine the historical significance of this site. The fort is a great spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing on the loop, the trail descends slightly before ascending again towards St Gregory's Holl Fort, located about 3 km (1.9 miles) from the start.
