This trail offers a blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty, making it a rewarding hike for those with a medium level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Housesteads Roman Fort, Bardon Mill, Hexham NE47 6NN, which is a convenient starting point with parking facilities. For public transport, take a train to Hexham Station and then a bus (AD122) towards Housesteads Roman Fort.
The trail begins near Housesteads Roman Fort, one of the best-preserved forts along Hadrian's Wall. This ancient Roman fortification offers a glimpse into the life of Roman soldiers stationed here nearly 2,000 years ago. Spend some time exploring the ruins and the museum before you start your hike.
From Housesteads, head west along Hadrian's Wall. The path here is well-marked and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach Castle Nick, a notable dip in the wall that provides a dramatic landscape and excellent photo opportunities. The elevation gain in this section is moderate, around 100 meters (328 feet).
Continuing west, the trail takes you through rolling hills and past ancient stone structures. After another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll arrive at Crag Lough, a picturesque lake nestled among rocky outcrops. This section involves a gentle descent followed by a climb, with an elevation change of about 150 meters (492 feet). The area around Crag Lough is rich in wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals.
The final leg of the loop takes you back east towards Housesteads. This 7 km (4.3 miles) stretch is relatively flat, with minor undulations. Along the way, you'll pass through lush meadows and ancient woodlands, offering a serene end to your hike. The total elevation gain in this section is around 50 meters (164 feet).
Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans in AD 122, stretches across Northern England and served as a defensive fortification.
