“Embark on a historic trek through lush woodlands and rugged gorges in Northumberland's scenic Allen Banks trail.”
Nestled in the picturesque Northumberland countryside, the Allen Banks and Staward Gorge trail offers a serene yet invigorating hiking experience. This approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) loop trail, with an elevation gain of around 100 metres (328 feet), is a medium-difficulty hike that takes you through ancient woodlands and along the dramatic river gorge.
The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Ridley Hall, Northumberland. For those arriving by car, there is a parking area at Ridley Hall, which is a short walk from the start of the trail. If you're using public transport, the nearest bus stops are in the nearby towns, from where you can take a taxi to the trailhead.
As you embark on your hike, the path will lead you through a mixed woodland, with the River Allen accompanying you on one side. The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have the HiiKER app handy for navigation. The woodland is a haven for wildlife, so keep an eye out for red squirrels, woodpeckers, and if you're lucky, you might even spot an otter along the river.
The area is steeped in history, with Staward Gorge being home to the remains of Staward Peel, a medieval fortress. As you hike, you'll come across the ruins, which are a testament to the region's turbulent past. The gorge itself has been carved out over millennia by the flowing waters of the River Allen, creating a dramatic and rugged landscape.
Approximately halfway through the hike, you'll reach the highlight of the trail – the view of Staward Gorge. Here, the path takes you to a vantage point offering breathtaking views of the gorge below. The area is also known for its diverse flora, including a variety of ferns and wildflowers, particularly in the spring and summer months.
The trail can be rocky and uneven in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. After rain, the path may become muddy and slippery, so extra caution is needed. It's also advisable to carry water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the route.
The Allen Banks and Staward Gorge trail is a journey through natural beauty and history. With its moderate difficulty, it's suitable for most hikers who are prepared for a bit of a challenge. Remember to respect the natural environment and leave no trace of your visit to preserve the beauty of this special place for future generations.
